The small but historic town of Pomaria is located just short drive from Columbia in Newberry County. It’s neighboring town of Newberry is home to Newberry College and is described as a small town with big city luxuries, home to plenty of the expected mom-and-pop shops but also boast a state of the art medical facility, high-tech conference center, a world class performing arts center and an overall thriving economy. Pomaria is a popular destination for hikers who want to hike the Palmetto Trail, Peak to Prosperity Passage. This trail proceeds west from the Alston trailhead in Fairfield County across the impressive Broad River trestle. The view from the 1,100-foot-long bridge is spectacular, especially when bald eagles soar. Across the river in Newberry County, the rail-trail skirts Peak and cuts an easy swath through piedmont forest to Pomaria and Prosperity. Along the passage, 14 wooden trestles span the meandering Crims Creek where German immigrants settled in the 1730s. The area is known as the Dutch Fork.
